Follow her if you want to hear about all of the firsts, foibles, frustrations, and follies of an expat’s life abroad. There will be travels and travesties both, that’s a promise.

A little background: Ann teaches English part time at Auburn University, Montgomery. Her past experiences and adventures include teaching jobs at UMUC, Methodist University, and Valdosta State University, and years of expat life on the Turkish Mediterranean (3 years) and in Northern England (4 years).  Her foibles and follies. . .are too lengthy to list here.

UPDATE:  We’re now on the ground in Germany!!

  1. Looking forward to hearing of your exploits. Now I just need to cash together and convince the Lady that a summer holiday in Germany = Good! (Shouldn’t be hard though).

  2. I was just about to leave a comment on your most recent post and the comments are closed. . Not sure if you knew about readers not being able to comment but it can be changed in dashboard. If you want any help let me know 🙂

    1. Okay, I’ve battled the computer for far too long. I’ve made sure that I’ve selected “allow comments,” and it still appears to be closed. I’m beyond my intelligence level here–any help you can offer would be great!

      1. Happy to help.
        Go to your Dashboard.
Go down to Settings and then choose Discussion. Under Other comment settings look at the third line and tick box. Make sure you do not have that one ticked to close comments in a specified number of days. That should do it. 🙂

  3. Delightful reading! I can relate! We’ve been living near Trier for the last19 years, on the borders of Luxembourg and France, our Messperanto is pretty good!

  4. Thanks for following our blog. We enjoyed our 8 years living in the north of England and more recent expat assignments in Asian countries. Now we visit Europe for 3 weeks every year and liked your blog on the baker who saved Metz.

  5. Hello! I can relate to some of your experiences as I once lived the expat life. I’d like to nominate you for the One Lovely Blog Award. If you are interested, my blog has more information. Looking forward to reading more about your adventures!

    1. Thanks so much, that’s really kind! I’ll take a look at the information in the next day or two and jump on it!
I also look forward to reading your blog.
It’s funny, I started blogging as a way to let family know what we are up to, but I’ve had so much fun getting to know the blogging community and learning from other bloggers.

  6. Hello…

I was recently ‘told off’ by a blogger (not a follower I might add), who said my style of ‘welcome’ note was very much against blogging etiquette. Hmm, well I hope not to cause offence, but as you volunteered to become a follower of Uncle Spike’s Adventures, I just wanted to catch up and say “thank you, and that I appreciate your ‘follow’ as there are so many interesting and entertaining blogs out there.

Blogging since June 2013, my aim is to deliver an eclectic offering of posts, from my ‘point n shoot’ attempts at basic photography, to the sharing of my travel adventures over the decades, as well as day to day happenings here on our farm in Turkey. Oh, plus a few observations, opinions and lighter-hearted stuff thrown in for good measure.

I normally keep to a couple of posts a day, maybe 3-4 at weekends if I have something special to share. But if you are at a loose end one day, maybe you’ll enjoy trawling through some of my older stuff too. I have added plenty of categories to help in said digging process. That’s not me trying to be pushy or ‘spamming’, but just want you to know what I’m all about.

Thanks again and hope you have a great day…

  8. Dear Ann,

I am a television producer working on the US travel show ‘House Hunters International’. We are looking for English speaking expats who have recently moved to Germany to feature on our show. I wonder if you might like to share your story?
House Hunters International is a half-hour TV show currently airing on the Home and Garden Television Network (HGTV) in America. The series is designed to de-mystify the international home-buying / renting process, by going behind the scenes of a house hunt where expats and their real estate agents tour 3 homes. At its core, House Hunters International is a travel show concentrating on the idiosyncrasies of the locales and what makes them special and different.
Here is a link to show you what our show is all about!

We would love to film in Germany again so please get in touch if you or any of your contacts might be interested in finding out more!
    Best wishes,
    Michelle

    1. Hello Michelle,
I am familiar with your show–it’s great! How exciting that you are looking for expats.
Let me ask you a couple of questions. We are renting property, and I’ve only seen shows where you cover the purchasing market. Are you looking to feature people who rent? Also, what sort of time line and time commitment might be involved? (Filming spring, summer, fall? Over the course of a few days or few weeks?)
Let me know a little more, and we’ll see whether we might be a good fit for the show, or whether any of our friends might.
I look forward to hearing from you!
      Ann

  9. Thanks for visiting my place. Thought I’d return the favor. Very interesting your What’s in a Name? A whale of a tale. Of course the sacrificial cannibalism was a bit creepy, but fascinating.
